#1785 - Brett Weston
“My work is my language and I don’t discuss it very easily. It’s difficult for me to verbalize my feelings or to intellectualize my work.”

~ Brett Weston
(1911-1993)

Brett’s artistic process was deceptively simple. He worked with large-format cameras, believed firmly in pre-visualizing his final images before exposure, and produced immaculate prints. What’s harder to convey are the countless hours he devoted to thinking through his work and perfecting each final print. This is why so few photographers have ever come close to matching the level of achievement he reached over his long and prolific career.

On his 80th birthday, he destroyed the majority of his negatives, not wanting others to print from them after his passing. At the time, this act was seen as highly controversial, yet it’s a decision that ultimately commands respect. Brett was an artist who had unquestionably earned the right to follow his own path—and he did so, with conviction, throughout his entire life.
