#1871 - William Klein
“Be yourself I much prefer seeing something even if it is clumsy that doesn’t look like somebody else’s work”

~ William Klein
(1926-2022)

“Ugliness is superior to beauty because it last longer.”

~ Serge Gainsbourg
(1928-1991)

William and Serge were kindred spirits. Both rebels and iconoclasts. They were destined to collaborate. Bill photographed Serge for the cover of his iconic album “Love in the Beat” portraying Gainsbourg in drag as a provocative Diva. Klein’s raw, high contrast, style perfectly captured Gainsbourg’s rebellious personality extending their link from music to film and to art.

In this Valentine Day’s season it’s hard to forget what controversy Serge’s song “Je t’aims -moi non plus “ he performed with his muse Jane Birkin caused back in the day.
