Through his instinct and artistry, Herb captured one of the great images in Jazz history. Thelonious Monk, whose genius gave us timeless compositions such as ’Round Midnight, Blue Monk, Straight, No Chaser, Ruby, My Dear, and In Walked Bud, was performing at the United Nations that day. Positioned just across the piano, Herb noticed the reflection of the keys in Monk’s sunglasses — a fleeting detail that revealed the spirit of the man and his music.
