#1780 - John F. Bullock
"In photography there is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality."

~ Alfred Steiglitz
(1864-1946)

John F. Bullock was a widely exhibited Pictorialist photographer, shown in leading salons at the turn of the century. He caught the attention of Alfred Stieglitz, who included him in the Photo-Secession’s inaugural 1902 exhibition at the National Arts Club in New York. His work is now part of the collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Smithsonian.
This print is incredibly atmospheric, tender, and inspiring. I’ve always thought of it like a great Mary Cassatt painting—the way the light streams across her white dress and the intensity of her focus. Had it been captured indoors, it simply wouldn’t possess the same luminous atmosphere and quiet power.
