#1746 - Arnold Newman
“I have tried to attain the spirit and feeling of the individual artist, without resorting to copying his or her work or their surface style.”

~ Arnold Newman
(1918-2006)

“The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes. If you foolishly ignore beauty, you will soon find yourself without it. Your life will be impoverished. But if you invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.”

~ Frank Lloyd Wright
(1867-1959)

“Through his intelligence, imagination, and technical skill, Arnold was soon recognized for his distinct style of ‘integrative portraits,’ also called environmental portraits.
In such photographs, Newman depicted his sitters in their personal space, be it home, art studio, or workplace. While the photographs appear candid, Newman carefully staged each sitter’s space to reveal an aspect of their personality or profession. He would build an environment by arranging objects in the foreground or pinning items up on the walls in the background. Newman honed his skills at interpreting and art directing his sitters and their spaces through meticulous research prior to each shoot, developing a deep understanding of the ways his images would translate onto the magazine page. His understanding of these building blocks gained him respect among magazine editors as a peer and collaborator.”
