It’s 1966. I’m in Brighton, UK just about to start my college years at the University of Sussex. It is pouring rain and freezing cold. Damp and wet I jump into a little cafe to get some coffee to warm up. This song comes on the juke box and I’m just blown away by its power. It starts my Beach Boys and California obsession. I think to myself there has to be another way to live in a place with sun and hope and where maybe dreams can come true. And here I am all these years later..
the song still haunts me.
Paul McCartney eloquently said it today for all of us, “Brian had that mysterious sense of musical genius that made his songs so achingly special. The notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time. I loved him and was privileged to be around his bright shining light for a little while”. RIP Brian.
