“It was in New York that I honed my skills and began to learn about the world and myself"
~ Arthur Leipzig

“It would be difficult to rub out the memory of boys diving into the East River-enough to make one want to be a boy forever”
~ Gordon Parks
(1912 - 2006)
It is summer in New York now, and it sure is hot. I think many of our readers would love to do what these kids are doing right now. New York has always been a source of creativity for so many photographers, and for Arthur, it was his touchstone. He was a deeply humble and wonderful man who, whenever I was in his presence, impressed me with his openness and heart.
I immediately understood why he was such a revered teacher. He taught at Long Island University for nearly 30 years. I remember visiting him there once and sitting in on one of his classes.
His students absolutely loved him. Through his wonderful photos, it's clear that he wore his heart on his sleeve.
