When I look at Ryuji Taira’s photographs of dandelions, I can’t help but see a reflection of ourselves and the fragility of life. His practice feels like an act of both preservation and letting go. He carefully grows these dandelions himself, knowing that their fullest moment may last only an instant, and through his extraordinary platinum printing, he gives that moment a permanence it could never otherwise have.
There is something deeply moving to me about this – almost like an old family portrait, preserving a life and a moment that has already passed. I hope his beautiful work brings you some of the same feelings it brings me.
