George Tice understood that the American landscape doesn't need spectacle to be profound. Sometimes all it takes is a lonely road, a passing car, and the patience to recognize when an ordinary moment has become extraordinary.
Country Road is also a masterclass in printing. Tice was one of the finest darkroom printers of his generation, and this particular image demonstrates his remarkable ability to separate tones within near-black shadows while preserving luminous highlights. The richness of the print is as important as the composition itself.
