#2023 - Reuben Saidman
“Hard work will always overcome natural talent when natural talent does not work hard enough.”

~ Sir Alex Ferguson

As the World Cup is now underway and excitement continues to build around the globe, my friend Bob Thomas and I invite you to explore a selection of photographs that capture the spirit, emotion, and enduring appeal of the beautiful game. From moments of triumph, camaraderie and celebration, these images reflect the power of soccer to unite and inspire. We hope these photographs bring back cherished memories, spark new conversations, and celebrate the passion that makes the game so beloved around the world.

"On a misty November afternoon photographer Reuben Saidman chooses a viewpoint amongst the crowd on the terraces at Molineux armed with a 4x5 plate camera and composes his photograph to include members of the crowd including a solitary women wearing a headscarf and surrounded by men. More than 55,000 people were in attendance, whilst Saidman was working on assignment for the Weekly Illustrated magazine, a rival to Picture Post. The 4x5 glass plate negative survives to provide an atmospheric view of the game and those in attendance. Born in 1906, Reuben Saidman had trained with his four brothers in his father's studio. The Saidman brothers then established their own photographic studio in Blackpool." - Bob Thomas
