“Architecture has its own realm. It has a special physical relationship with life.
I do not think of it primarily as either a message or a symbol but as an envelope and background for life which goes on and in and around it, a sensitive container for the rhythm of footsteps on the floor, for the concentration of work, for the silence of sleep.”

~ Peter Zumthor

After decades of planning, LACMA’s new museum building has finally opened. It is an occasion to be celebrated and embraced.

Peter Zumthor’s building is simply sublime, uplifting, and joyous to experience and be a part of. The design and layout of the works confirm the power of art in its ability to be, quite simply, transcendental.

Photography is well represented in this initial presentation. I found it especially wonderful to be reunited with several images that we had sold over the years to great collectors, who then generously donated the works to the museum.

It confirmed in my mind that photography remains the most democratic medium in the art world — one where it is still possible to own a work similar to those now hanging in one of the most important museums in the world.

I urge you all to go visit. You will not leave disappointed, and I hope you will be inspired even more to continue your own collecting journey.
