“During my childhood, I frequently pondered, ‘Where did I come from and where am I going?”
~ Ryuji Taira (b. 1960)
When photography is felt rather than simply seen, an intimate connection forms between artist and viewer—something that can only come from honest work. Ryuji Taira is a master of quality and patience, working with the platinum printing process and, at times, coating his paper with lacquer for up to ten years before ever making a print. As a child, he spent hours studying small insects and plants with a sense of wonder. That quiet fascination with the overlooked has stayed with him throughout his life, gently echoing in the work he makes today.
