“You can find pictures anywhere. It’s simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. You just have to care about what’s around you and have a concern for humanity and the human comedy.”
~ Elliott Erwitt
(1928-2023)
Elliott Erwitt—an all-time favorite, both as a human being and a photographer: intelligent, insightful, gracious, and deeply humane. On temporary leave from army service, he was staying with his friend Robert Frank and his wife, capturing this wonderfully joyful moment.
Friendship meant a great deal to Elliott—he was a loyal and steadfast presence in a field often marked by quiet rivalries and resentments. He stood apart, and his long-standing bond with Frank, seen here, speaks to that enduring warmth and generosity of spirit.
