Yes, the English are eccentric for sure, and sometimes totally ridiculous. I guess I’m allowed to say that, having been born there.
Here is one of Henri’s truly insightful and really hilarious images.
He has been sent over to cover the Coronation of King George VI. He is 28 years old at the time, full of energy and passion.
Every other photojournalist there is focusing on the pageantry of it all and the images of the King parading through the adoring crowds.
But not Henri. What he finds much more interesting are the spectators and their antics. The English, of course, as we know, look for any excuse to get plastered. One only senses that the gentleman in the center is seconds away from falling down dead drunk to join his fellow Londoner, passed out on the ground in the debris of the mess.
This was taken before the Monty Python guys were even conceived, but it is straight out of their world.
