“The world makes up my pictures not me"

~ Lee Friedlander

“In the past decade a new generation of photographers has directed the documentary approach towards more personal ends. Their aim has been not to reform life, but to know it. Their work betrays a sympathy - a trust, an affection - for the imperfections and frailties of society. They like the real world in spite of it’s terrors as the source of all wonder and fascination and value-no less precious for being irrational ."

~ John Szarkowski

Lee is one of the giants of 20th Century photography. Much of his work focuses on the street and the complexity of people and how we all react and relate to one another. He also often uses his own shadow to give yet another personal dimension to his images. As an Englishman he has helped me understand modern American life in all it’s complexities and off kilter ways.. He is truly driven to constantly make images with no let up over the many decades. It is his wit and intelligence that has made him such a massive force in photography.
