#935 - Ruth Bernhard

“I never question what to do. It tells me what to do. The photographs make themselves with my help”

~ Ruth Bernhard
(1905-2006)

I think Ruth is being unduly modest here. It takes such enormous talent and technical skill to create an image like this that exudes incredible power and beauty especially for those of us that revere cinema. This is an era before streaming was ever conceived, when a trip to a beautiful cinema to see a great film on a big screen with an audience was pure magic.

The great architect Frederick Kiesler was an acquaintance of Ruth’s celebrated graphic designer father. He helped her find much needed work when she first arrived in New York in the 1940’s before she headed West.
