Literature
“Art is the totality of our being, the totality of our experience. Every time I press the shutter, it’s the totality of who I am and all that I’ve experienced”~John Simmons
I came across this image and immediately felt the need to know more about its maker. It was a one -two punch to the heart. I found out that John has spent most of his life as a much sought after cinematographer. His work has been dedicated to imagery. As a young man growing up in Chicago in the turbulent 1960’s he sort out and captured the unseen details of Black culture revealing the beauty of intimate moments of the community he knew so well. They also exude the universality of cherished moments we all experience. As John notes “One hundred years from now when a photograph can only speak for itself “Love On the Bus” will forever say the same thing and make us feel the same way”. I cannot agree more and I feel so fortunate to have encountered this truly special image.
