Salgado was born in Aimorés, Brazil in 1944. Before starting his career as a photographer in 1973, he studied economics. He has traveled to over 100 countries, capturing world-renowned photographs that fill his many award-winning books.
Salgado began photographing Africa and the peoples who inhabit it in the 1970s, at the outset of his carreer. In Africa, Salgado captures the catastrophic events that have afflicted the multitudes of people of Africa. In addition to the pride and the beauty of the continent, his subjects include drought, genocide, and refugees.
