William Gottlieb was born in New York City in 1917. He is renowned for his photographs of jazz musicians in the 1940s. Among his subjects were Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, and many more.
He died in 2006. The Library of Congress purchased a complete set (1600 photographs) of William Gottlieb's Jazz photography for posterity. Gottlieb was also a well-known journalist for the Washington Post and carried his camera with him on all assignments.
